Simple Yet Easy Mattress Cleaning Tips That You Can Do At Home

Sleep is essential for maintaining the physical and mental health of a person. But did you know that the mattress you sleep on has the most allergens in your home? So keeping your mattress clean is essential for your health as these allergens lead to many health issues. But cleaning a mattress does not mean changing bed sheets or occasional flipping, it is more than that. If you fear that cleaning a mattress is a tough and cumbersome job, it is not. Here are some simple mattress cleaning tips that you can do at home taking no help of professional cleaners.

Remove the bedding often: The best and the simplest way to start the cleaning process of your memory foam mattress or for that matter any mattress is to remove the bed sheets, pillow covers, mattress protectors, etc often and put them for a wash. It is recommended that you use the hot water cycle so that all the allergens are killed. Check if it is possible to wash the pillows too as some types of pillows can be washed.

Vacuum: Once you have removed all the bedding and put it to wash, the next is to vacuum all corners of the mattress to remove dirt and other debris. Clean the corners, sides, seams, and cracks using a vacuum cleaner. To remove odours take baking soda and scrub it on the mattress. If needed add some non-staining essential oils to the mixture and allow it to get into the fabric. After a few hours use a vacuum cleaner to clean up the baking soda. The mattress will smell clean and fresh.

To remove stains: For simple stains, you can use a dish detergent or cleaning solution to remove it. Spray the solution and allow it to rest on the mattress for a few minutes. Remove the excess solution by blotting it and allowing the rest to dry naturally. If the stains are hard to remove, use baking soda on the mattress and leave it to dry overnight. Vacuum the spot the next day.

Buy a mattress protector: It is always wise to use a waterproof mattress protector on your bed mattress as it can act as a shield. This will cover the mattress from any accidental spills and stains as it does not allow any liquid to seep through it. If the protector is made of hypoallergenic material it is an added advantage as it protects the mattress from dust, dirt and other allergens accumulating on the mattress. A bed sheet can be used to cover the mattress protector and acts as an additional layer of protection.

Tips for cleaning bedding

  • Check symbols: Cleaning bedding is also a simple task if there are no stains on it. It is as easy as washing your daily clothes but only if you follow the care instructions mentioned. Some bedding like your blankets, pillowcases, etc shrinks due to not following the care. Check for wash symbols on them and then do the appropriate.
  • Pre-treat stains: If your bedding has stains then before putting it to the washing machine pre-treat it using a cleaning solution. Treat the spot with the cleaning solution allow it to rest for 5 to 10 minutes and then wash.
  • Wash in a machine which has enough space for bedding to move.
  • Hot water should not be used if there are stains.

Purchasing a mattress is a major investment not only in terms of money but also time-saving as you would have spent hours researching the mattresses and comparing them. In order to protect this investment and also make it usable for a long-time keeping it clean is essential. The above-mentioned simple cleaning steps will ensure that you sleep on a clean and healthy mattress.
